royal<p>Please <a href="https://theres.life/tags/boost" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>boost</span></a>. I'm looking for devices for storing long-term digital archives of files (text, PDF, etc, nothing exotic). Needs to be fairly futureproof. Probably doesn't need to be super high capacity (but it can be). I know certain kinds of optical media are designed for long-term storage, but I doubt our ability to find the right kind of drives in ten or twenty years, thus thinking USB will be a fairly stable physical interface. I'm willing to be convinced otherwise.</p><p>Doesn't have to be bottom-of-the-barrel; if (say) a typical USB stick isn't likely to work long term but some other USB-readable device is, I can look into that.</p><p>EDIT: After some reading I'm leaning toward an HDD, in FAT32 or EXFAT format, in a USB enclosure, with written instructions to spin it up once a year and reproduce it on new media every five years. </p><p><a href="https://theres.life/tags/archives" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>archives</span></a> <a href="https://theres.life/tags/digitalArchiving" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>digitalArchiving</span></a> <a href="https://theres.life/tags/digitalArchives" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>digitalArchives</span></a> <a href="https://theres.life/tags/askFedi" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>askFedi</span></a> <a href="https://theres.life/tags/storage" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>storage</span></a> <a href="https://theres.life/tags/DigitalPreservation" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>DigitalPreservation</span></a></p>
Neural<p>NEW BOOK: Tactical Publishing! I’m very excited to announce my new book “Tactical Publishing, Using Senses, Software, and Archives in the Twenty-First Century”, now published by MIT Press. It has taken many years to research and finalise the book, which I hope will be a solid sequel to "Post-Digital Print", and now it is finally in print. A huge thank you to all the generous people who have supported me over the years (the list is long), especially Ryan Bishop, Jussi Parikka, who along with Scott Rettberg and David Garcia has written very generous praise, my fabulous colleagues Jo Turney and Daniel Cid Moragas at Winchester School of Art - University of Southampton, Sean Cubitt and Doug Sery at MIT Press and Nick Montfort who José Manuel Barros<p>DIGITAL ARCHIVES AND COLLECTIONS<br>CREATING ONLINE ACCESS TO CULTURAL HERITAGE by Katja Müller (2021) (Made available under a CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 license).</p><p>"Museums and archives all over the world digitize their collections and provide online access to heritage material. But what factors determine the content, structure and use of these online inventories? This book turns to India and Europe to answer this question. It explains how museums and archives envision, decide and conduct digitization and online dissemination. It also sheds light on born-digital, community-based archives, which have established themselves as new actors in the field".</p><p><a href="https://hcommons.social/tags/Book" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Book</span></a> <a href="https://hcommons.social/tags/Libraries" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Libraries</span></a> <a href="https://hcommons.social/tags/CulturalHeritage" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>CulturalHeritage</span></a> <a href="https://hcommons.social/tags/Archives" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Archives</span></a> <a href="https://hcommons.social/tags/Collection" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Collection</span></a> <a href="https://hcommons.social/tags/Museum" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Museum</span></a> <a href="https://hcommons.social/tags/Anthropology" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Anthropology</span></a> <a href="https://hcommons.social/tags/DigitalArchives" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>DigitalArchives</span></a> <a href="https://hcommons.social/tags/OpenAccess" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>OpenAccess</span></a> <a href="https://hcommons.social/tags/Documentation" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Documentation</span></a></p><p><span class="h-card"><a href="https://a.gup.pe/u/academicchatter" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>academicchatter</span></a></span> <br><span class="h-card"><a href="https://a.gup.pe/u/anthropology" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>anthropology</span></a></span> </p><p><a href="https://www.berghahnbooks.com/title/MuellerDigital" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">berghahnbooks.com/title/Muelle</span><span class="invisible">rDigital</span></a></p>

Brenna Edwards<p>Hello <a href="https://digipres.club/tags/digitalArchives" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>digitalArchives</span></a> friends, tis I again. Someone somewhere allows on-site forensic investigations of their born digital material and has the rules outlined on what the researcher can take with them. The problem is I have forgotten who! Any leads?<br>(I don't know where everyone is these days, so also posted this on the bird site)</p>
Jolene Smith<p>I'm missing my old network on the birdsite for this kind of query. Any <a href="https://hcommons.social/tags/archaeology" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>archaeology</span></a> and/or <a href="https://hcommons.social/tags/digitalarchives" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>digitalarchives</span></a> folks out there with recommendations on curating Ground Penetrating Radar datasets (DZT, DZX)? Challenges: they are v big &amp; proprietary, we don't even have the software to read them in native format. I'm not even sure whether we should accept or recommend curation elsewhere.</p>
