Each of these women had been honored for excellence at school and/or cultural activities. Each had a positive welcome statement in the <a href="https://mindly.social/tags/Cherokee" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Cherokee</a> language and in English. They addressed the audience and the many native dancers and singers (and their supporters) that had arrived from all over North America.My favorite was the 8-year-old, with assistance to lower the mic. Joe Wynne 🌻 🚗 ⛰️During 1938/39, the U.S. government removed ~17,000 Cherokees from North Carolina and the SE in what is now known as the "Trail of Tears". A minority avoided the military roundup. This is the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians and they remain on their historical lands. By 1870, the area was surveyed and named The Qualla. So it's not a "reservation" as legally defined.
