Celebrating our 70th anniversary: “[Molly Ivins] came already baked, so to speak. She was already almost fully developed as a writer. So there was not much editing to do, except maybe tone down some of the excesses. I think I saved a couple of libel suits ...” texasobserver.org/forging-thei

The Texas Observer · Forging Their Own Way: Kaye Northcott on Texas Observer HistoryAs co-editors of the Texas Observer, Kaye Northcott and Molly Ivins used humor and embedded themselves in the feminist movement.

It turns out I am fairly good at figuring out the history of property evolution through the BC Land Title Act website (apps.ltsa.ca/srs/app#/search)… it's fun seeing the connections from 1909 settlers to modern subdividers!

My only complaint is once a map "Plan" has been overcome by subsequent subdivisions, it becomes unviewable! This makes me sad!

Case in point: I believe the outlined area was "Plan 1757" but it is not accessible online as it's been all divided up.

Reminder: the real "war on Christmas" was, historically, perpetrated BY Christians against people who wanted to have fun.

"In the 3rd century, the Roman Empire, which at the time had not adopted Christianity, celebrated the rebirth of the Unconquered Sun (Sol Invictus) on December 25th. .. also ... the Saturnalia (during which people feasted and exchanged gifts). It was also the birthday of the Indo-European deity Mithra"
"The church in Rome began formally celebrating Christmas on December 25 in 336 ... some have speculated that choosing this date had the political motive of weakening the established pagan celebrations."

"Christmas was once seen as so un-Christian that various religious groups tried to ban it altogether. In the 17th century, English puritans—who believed December 25 should be treated like any other day—prohibited Christmas celebrations."
"The true spirit of Christmas has always been about eating, drinking, and having a good time."

“[Alan] Pogue takes photographs that are open-eyed and unblinking views of what many would rather not see.”

For our 70th anniversary, we look back at how one photographer documented progressive struggle across decades of Texas life, and captured the Observer's history at the same time too: texasobserver.org/alan-pogue-p

The Texas Observer · Bearing Witness: Alan Pogue's Life of Documenting Progressive StrugglePogue has spent his career photographing fights for social justice. Along the way, he captured the history of the Observer, too.

Dhevarajan Devadas, a Singapore historian, posted a link to this newspaper article from 1984 asking young people what they thought about the rapid economic growth we were experiencing

Then 26 year old Suratiman Sinthar was prescient: "he was confident Singapore could achieve the Swiss standard of living but warned "there was no point in a high standard of living if the cost of living got out of control".

Oppressors Gonna Oppress. And get tossed:

Article by historian Alvin Finkel includes several examples from his book "Humans: The 300,000-Year Struggle for Equality". Including Sparta, Athens, Dark Ages, 1381 English peasant rebellion, etc.

"Ruling classes always practise divide and conquer. But the message from the past is that unity against oppressors can occur and no economic system, including capitalism, can be viewed as permanent."
