While walking in the woods, I came across dozens of Frigid Mining Bees (Andrena frigida), making their homes in the dirt of the trail! They were sunning themselves on tree trunks, and buzzing along the ground looking for promising locations to dig, or for mates.

This one was basking by what I presume was its nest. Unlike cellophane bees, they apparently do not leave open entrances, but fill their doorways with dirt that they "swim" through.

✨ Hello there ! 😊

I can tell it's spring because the Unequal Cellophane Bees (Colletes inaequalis) are out and about in my neighbor's yard! Please enjoy this bee investigating a crocus. (Sadly these flowers are introduced and may not help this native bee, but this bee is determined to find out.)

If you're wondering why they're "Unequal", inaequalis in Latin apparently also means "impermanent"; they only emerge briefly.
