Well, dammit. Random woke me up at 1am thought: My ancient 2009-vintage PowerBook Mac still worked last time I checked (a few years ago). Except that I just remembered that I think I unthinkingly took the power cord to recycling last year in a fit of cleaning out old cords & cables & whatnot.. Dammit. Because it had an on-board DVD player that worked perfectly well, too. 😭

I deleted 10GB of video (a few big files) from iPhoto library yesterday and today deleted about 20GB of photos. My used volume space on the boot drive where the library lives did not reduce at all in either instance.

Yes, I also deleted them from the Recently Deleted folder in Photos app -- so they are _gone_. Also, I do have save photos fully locally (am not set to save space by pulling some of the data from iCloud).

I rebooted, still the same after.

What is going on here?

I want to free up data. I see there is 120GB "purgeable" on the volume.

What apfs fuckery is this?

@caseyliss Hi. Have you heard of this Time Machine backup failure in macOS Sequoia that has hit a number of people, including myself?

It goes like this, a backup fails with the message "Time Machine did not finish backing up because some files were unavailable. Backups will resume when your Mac is unlocked."

My Mac Studio never sleeps, and there is no screensaver password. The backup failed while I was using it, in fact. There's no "unlocking" to be done...

I started seeing this upgrading from 15.0 to 15.1.1. No backup has completed since.

Thread about it here, and end of page 2 I post some TM logs with many errors:

What's great in MacOS that make you using it? (if you use it)

I know multiple people (linux users) who have to deal with MacOS daily at work, and from their perspective, it's a huge pain to work with.

So i'm curious to know the opinions from genuine MacOS users who certainly enjoy it? (I hope so at least  )

ColdMac. A 2009 iMac, in a shed, outside Boston.

coldmac.macfixer.com

"ColdMac is an old Apple computer that lives in my shed and tracks its own internal and external temperatures, and also hosts this webpage displaying that data.

The shed this Mac lives in is very cold. It is located just outside Boston, MA. It is not insulated, the door has no seal, and there are two vents in the walls. So while there is a very limited amount of thermal protection, it's generally within 5 degrees or less of the actual outside temperature at night. During a sunny day, the shed can warm up much warmer than the outside temp."

I was dubious about the utility of lighted keyboards (certainly nothing I ever felt a need for?) when I got my current #Mac. But over the time I've had it, the paint on the surface of the keys has worn off, & with it the identifiers of several of the most-used keys.

I touch-type, so this isn't as much of a problem as it might be, but it turns out to be a real problem with keyboard shortcuts, which I don't have memorized kinesthetically.

If you can't read the damn keys, This Is A Problem.

One of my colleagues works remotely and used to do occasional testing on a #Mac. However the Mac he had was left lying around since it was stuck on 10.13 and hence has not been getting security updates since November 12, 2020 and has not even been usable with Vivaldi for a long while also.

We are sending him a newer Apple Silicon based Mac (since that would also allow easier testing of internal builds using iOS simulator) but in the mean time I pointed out that he could upgrade his current machine with #OpenCoreLegacyPatcher, despite Apple preventing upgraded via the regular method.

He went all the way from #macOS #HighSierra 10.13, right up to macOS 15 #Sequoia without any obvious issues. Once again, it is silly that Apple is letting these working machines just be wasted.

Another #BlackFriday #IndieAppSale deal I want to shout out is #HandMirror by @rafa. It’s a free app for the #Mac for quickly checking how you look before a video call. Just click an icon in the menu bar and you see what your Mac’s camera sees.

The sale is on the Plus IAP, down to its lowest price ever, $2.99. This adds some small tweaks like making sure your mic is working. I personally bought it to support the developer of one of my most used apps.
