Retro.pizza is a Mastodon server dedicated to nerd culture with the values of the fictional heroes we admire: to value diversity like the X-Men, to be as kind as the Doctor, to defend the weak like Optimus Prime and fight against fascism like Princess Leia.

What's the difference between being interested in something, and being a die-hard fan? According to Michael Elliott, a professor of sociology at Towson University, the latter have a level of devotion that is almost religious — and in some cases, fandom can even provide a moral code. "Many fans describe comic-con culture as a source of principles — such as inclusivity, compassion and self-development — that guide their behavior," writes Elliott for @TheConversationUS.

People really be on #Tumblr stating AO3 *needs* a 'Dislike' button and also an 'Algorithm'?

Firstly it's an ARCHIVE it's not designed to algorithmically 'Feed' you 'Content'

Someone created some fiction because they are a fan of a thing FOR FREE !

And you accessed it for FREE !

And you wanna flounce on in a mash a Dislike button ?

The 'Like' button exists ! It's called Kudos

The 'Dislike' method is - Great Googly Moogly - just don't read the thing !

Gah!

File 770: Obituary for Mark R. Leeper, written by his wife Evelyn C. Leeper.

Usenetters who read rec.arts.sf.* will remember the Leepers; I certainly do!

"He was employed at Bell Laboratories in Holmdel and surrounding locations for 23 years until his retirement in 2001. ... For many years, Mark had been the longest-running film reviewer on the Internet, regularly publishing reviews since 1984, and being a member of the Online Film Critics Society since 2014. His first science fiction convention was Boskone VI (1969) and he attended dozens of conventions, serving on panels about film, and also leading origami workshops at many of them."

Here's a sort of reintroduction post showing some recent-ish work.

I chose these examples because I don't think they need CWs, whereas some of my other work would, but the first image does have alcohol in it (hence the blur)

@freakboy3742 chiming in to be intersectional and say that the exact same thing is happening in #fandom spaces: someone posts a story, and many people read it, and the creator gets some kudos or likes or hearts or whatever, but recently fewer and fewer comments (depending on fandom size and culture). And everyone is saying that fandom used to be interactive and that leaving encouraging comments is essential to keep fic writers writing and fandoms alive. (part 1 of 2, probably)

Dear Mastodon, what is a good instance for genre cinema and television #fandom ? Should I rather stay on a generic instance like this one? In particular #sciencefiction #crime #paranormal #mystery #1990s #2000s (does that count as #retro ?) Looking for something more than just #StarTrek :) Putting some tags here hoping to get replies/boosts #cinemastodon #television #tv #TheXFiles #TwinPeaks #Babylon5 #Stargate #TwilightZone #TheOuterLimits #BSG #Carnivale #Millennium #sff #scifi #fedihelp
