Seen from almost any angle, American goldfinches are handsome, curious, acrobatic birds, making them a delight to see.

*Almost* any angle.

Two goldfinches perch on a red-colored finch feeder. The goldfinch on the left is eating a seed and wearing old winter plumage, but looks alert. The finch on the right has brighter yellow plumage around the head, and its beak is pointed directly at the viewer in such a way that each of its eyes is pointed at an almost 90º angle from the camera; the first word one thinks of when looking at this bird is, unfortunately, "Derp?".

Last night after a 70F degree day, my spouse and I were guessing when we might see the first heron. They guessed late March/early April; I guessed March 30th
This afternoon our weather has turned windy, cold, and grey, with a rain-snow mix... It's bringing out the birds to our feeders, including a downy and a hairy woodpecker
And then, a few minutes later, we saw a great blue heron fly over our neighbor's house, the first of the season!!

Nobody fouls a birdbath quite like a city pigeon.

(But they are kinda handsome, though.)

Two largish, light-grey birds with dark-grey wing bars and heads sit, somewhat guiltily, on a birdbath clearly not meant to hold two birds of their size. Their necks are the only part of them that show they’ve just been bathing; the feathers are wet and bedraggled, but also slightly reflective, and range from green through violet to a light pink or red.

Each bird has fixed the camera with a single orange eye that would not look out of place on a dinosaur deciding how many mouthfuls it will take to eat you from head to toe.

It is hard to believe it’s already nesting season here in the #KC ‘burbs. This fella and his pretty lady are interested in our back box. They better hurry up, because the dumb house sparrows are aggressive this season, already!

Last year it took many nest evictions and a few sparrow traps before a native couple settled in.

A small eastern bluebird perched a top a shiny silver stick of EMT conduit. This small bird has gorgeous teal blue on its back and a Rufus breast with white underneath.

Rainbow lorikeet in a fig tree. This parrot truly deserves the moniker “rainbow”; it’s every primary colour you can name. It’s perched on a branch of a fig tree in my back yard.

A different rainbow lorikeet is happily helping itself to my fig tree’s ripe fruits. It’s perched on a branch reaching under to peck at a fig.

Elsewhere in the tree is a noisy miner, a grey and black honeyeater about the size of a blackbird. It has a distinctive yellow and black eye.

Today's small friends: a male house finch with a little something on his beak, and a strong independent cardinal lady.

A small streaky brown bird with red and orange feathers spattering his chest and crown perches sideways on a finch feeder made from red-painted old barn wood and wire mesh. The tip of his beak is covered in some kind of dark-colored schmutz.

A small brown bird with a bright red beak and slightly less-bright red crest, wings, and tail feathers stands on the edge of a green plastic birdbath facing away from the camera. Typically, these Carolina Wrens don't sit very long, but this little chunk plopped down on the suet feeder and sat for several minutes just looking around.

Carolina Wren sits atop a green mesh suet feeder. Orange spicy suet square fills the feeder. Bird had a rusty colored chest and underside, white neck and dark brown wing, back and tail feathers. Prominent white stripe above the eye can seen as the bird looks to the right.

Today's small friend: a northern mockingbird at the heated bird bath.

A robin-sized grey bird stands on the wooden platform surrounding a green plastic bird bath. Its darker-grey wing and tail feathers are trimmed with white. While its eyes are actually yellow, the single eye visible in this shot appears more grey, making the bird’s expression look oddly human.

Bonus small friends: a dark-eyed junco that I finally managed to get a decent shot of, and a male house finch showing both red and orange coloration.

A sparrow-sized bird with a black head, chest, and back and a white underbelly sits at attention on the tip of a wooden fence post. Its beak stands out against its black feathers due to being light-colored.
