Last year, the United States Marines judged a contest for teenage musicians, with the prize being the opportunity to perform with the U.S. Marine Band. It had been organized by a Chicago-based nonprofit called Equity Arc at the request of the Marines in response to the fact that American orchestras today are 80% white, 11% Asian, 5% Hispanic and 2% Black, and all the winners were musicians of color. Last month it was canceled because it contravened President Trump's executive order against diversity programs. The kids were disappointed — and so were veterans of military bands. So they decided to put on the show anyway, playing the music of the canceled concert — "Nobles of the Mystic Shrine" by John Philip Sousa. On Sunday, that concert took place, performed by what @CBSNews describes as "an improvised orchestra of equity that you might call America's own," including 22 teen competition winners. Watch the 60 Minutes coverage and read the transcript here.

Mass layoffs have begun at Voice of America (VOA), the U.S.'s government-funded media network. The move came after Trump signed an executive order to effectively eliminate the U.S. Agency for Global Media (USAGM), which supervises VOA, Radio Free Europe, Radio Free Asia and six other federal agencies. Here's more from Al Jazeera. At the second link, find a @CNN story about how the news of VOA's dismantling has been received in China.

And here it is, exactly what I feared. Getting rid of staff so they can install Trump's people.

Just today:

"Voice of America staff put on administrative leave"

"Full-time employees at Voice of America received an email this morning from human resources saying they have been placed on paid administrative leave, according to a copy of the memo that was obtained ABC News."

Statement by Kari Lake:

“We should not be paying outside news organizations to tell us what the news is,” said Lake, who ran unsuccessfully for Arizona governor. “With a nearly billion-dollar budget, we should be producing news ourselves. And if that’s not possible, the American taxpayer should demand to know why.”

Why should VOA be "producing news ourselves"?
So that the Trump administration can literally *control the news*.
