Simple but intense 2 player card battler. I much prefer games like this to CCGs. One deck gives you tons of variability without becoming a lifestyle game and a massive drain of cash.

The game need a specific card layout on the table, so my friend has upgraded to neoprene mats with a layout printed, which is a big upgrade.

Uprising Curse of the Last Emperor, 2 players

Got a tts game of this in with a friend on a whim. This game was an odd one, we managed to ease the way for partner in crime with an early quest roll and then he rolled out pretty well to destroy the threat he was facing. That left us pretty lopsided, with his side fo the board pretty built up and in quite a strong position, buying all sorts of items and deploying all of his units to the board by T2. That meant we had to sandbag my side a little bit the rest of the way, pointing the Legion's Executioner at him, but ultimately we breezed to a win on nightmare difficulty due to some things that went our way and questing to drop a nasty horde on the capital to clear a threat. By the mid-third turn, we knew we were in the lead, but it was still a good time anyway. My tilt toward the game is off the charts even if I don't think it's the best game in the world.

Having done it, I can heartily endorse just throwing in all the advanced cards once you have a little experience which is most of what constitutes "nightmare" difficulty. On one hand, you can pull all advanced card and face a significantly more difficult experience. On the other hand, that's unlikely and, moreover, the advanced cards are just wackier and more complex more than they are more difficult for the most part. So you're really missing out on the fun variety in the game if you don't shuffle those advanced cards in once you're reasonably experienced. I was super hestitant to do it, but my game partner was just like, hold up, throw all that stuff in, we'll be fine. And, indeed, we were. I do think it's clear that the game does not have a strong anchoring on its difficulty, as the order and character of what comes out seriously defines difficulty level.

Hello miniature painters of the world.

I'm looking for beginner guides that aren't videos. I know there's plenty of videos, but I follow written instructions much better. Unfortunately, most popular SEO optimised beginner tutorials are not great for a variety of reasons.

So, do you know of a smaller hobbyist blog or site that gives good advice and/or tutorials for newcomers? I'd love to read them if so!

Thanks ahead of time for any recommendations.

Caverna: Höhle gegen Höhle BB (2021)
2P; 90 min; 45:49 🙃

Argh, the teen destroyed us in #ArkNova. He somehow managed to play a lion near the start of the game? Then he scored some super high scoring animals at the end. On the plus side, I was in the positive and only 9 points behind at the end. @timcoffman was in the negative and 52 points from the lead. #BoardGames

What's Tak, you ask? Great question! It's a two player abstract boardgame that's "simple in its rules, complex in its strategy". It plays like an ancient game, but it is actually rather new.

You see, Patrick Rothfuss first mentioned Tak in the pages of his fantasy novel, The Wise Man's Fear. People wanted to play the game in real life and so a collaboration was hatched between Rothfuss and celebrated game designer, James Ernest. There was a wildly successful Kickstarter, and people have been playing Tak ever since.

You don't need to have read the books to enjoy Tak. It's just a great game!

People play both competitively and for fun. You can usually find us at GenCon and Pax Unplugged. There is a Portable Tak Notation system for analyzing games. There are more than a few bots to play against. In short, there is a small but robust ecosystem to extend your enjoyment of the game! 2/🧵

Hello! It's wonderful to meet you. Care for a game of Tak? We are the US Tak Association, and this is our #introduction post!

US Tak is a nonprofit group for people that love to play Tak and want to raise awareness about the game. We support casual and tournament play, both online and in person. We also embrace the DIY community that has been crafting Tak boards and pieces for years. 1/🧵

Captain's Chair, solo vs. Sisko bot

Quick concrete recommendation on how to play this game as I close in on 10 solo plays: definitely play with the advanced side of the boards once you're even halfway comfortable with a captain. The advanced side doesn't really add almost any extra complexity but opens up your options. You have to have at least one mission complete to win, realistically. If you don't finish a mission, you can't do any of the track scoring, which is basically necessary. The basic side only has one all or nothing mission. That limits your options and can put you in a bit of a jam depending on how the offer plays out. By having the three options, it relieves any pressure and lets you respond to what is available a little more fluidly.

I'd even recommend it if you're playing like low-level bots or novice players and the like otherwise in a difficulty sense. It's just a better game.

In game 7 of Lands of Galzyr we started to see a lot of repeat quests. A good chunk of the quests have "chains" and if you fail out of them the starting quest gets put back into rotation, so we're starting to see old plot lines re-emerge.

I'm still going to play this through a full in-game year but this was the first game where it started to feel monotonous. There is an expansion being made that will add more quests and content, but it doesn't come out for a few months.
