In retaliation for the Associated Press’ refusal to call the Gulf of Mexico to, well, you know, the Trump administration has barred the AP’s reporters from the White House press pool and events.

The AP has been a member of the White House press pool since it was founded in 1846. Having earned the honor of 59 Pulitzer Prizes, the AP is respected for its journalism with a worldwide reach of over 4 billion people per day.

The First Amendment guarantees freedom of the press and the right to free speech. The Fifth Amendment grants due process, and the AP was not given a formal opportunity to challenge the ban before it was implemented.

The AP has sued to regain access, arguing that the administration’s goal is to coerce journalists to use “only government-approved language” in reporting.

join.theintercept.comProtect Freedom of Press. Demand the White House Reinstate The Associated Press Now. One of the very first executive orders signed by President Donald Trump attempts to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America. But under international law, the American government doesn’t have the authority to change the name of the entire Gulf worldwide — and most countries, including Mexico and Cuba, aren’t accepting the name change. Likewise, noting that the area has carried the name the Gulf of Mexico for more than 400 years, The Associated Press decided not to change the name in their reporting. In retaliation, the Trump administration has barred the AP’s reporters from the White House press pool and events. [The New Yorker]: Why I Left the Washington Post.

Owner Jeff Bezos wants to transform the Opinions section of the paper, where I worked for forty years. After the publisher killed my column disagreeing with that move—it appears here in full—I decided to quit. By Ruth Marcus, Wednesday, March 12, 2025

A quotation from Arendt

The moment we no longer have a free press, anything can happen. What makes it possible for a totalitarian or any other dictatorship to rule is that people are not informed; how can you have an opinion if you are not informed?

Hannah Arendt (1906-1975) German-American philosopher, political theorist

A quotation from John Adams

[The people] have a right, an indisputable, unalienable, indefeasible, divine right to that most dreaded and envied kind of knowledge, I mean, of the characters and conduct of their rulers.

The jaws of power are always open to devour, and her arm is always stretched out, if possible, to destroy the freedom of thinking, speaking, and writing.

Recently I've been writing a lot about billionaire Afrikaner shitlord Elon Musk's attempts to use his vast wealth to silence folks pointing out that advertisers are effectively paying him to run X (formerly Twitter) like a gigantic fascist propaganda machine that demonizes his enemies, marks out targets for reactionary political violence, and attempts to subvert Pig Empire democracies to help create the kind of world where billionaires like Musk can happily go on extracting wealth while billions of people die on a boiling planet. I take no joy in writing about Musk, and I'm fully aware that many people reading this simply don't want to believe in the sheer scope of his ambitions because it's much easier to write him off as an assclown desperate for validation from 4chan nazis and unhinged Republican conspiracy theorists. Elon Musk may indeed be all of these things as well, but I think it's important to remember that because we live in a capitalist society (on the brink of climate catastrophe and ecological collapse) where money is power, the fact that Musk is transparently a dipshit, is far less important than the fact that he's literally one of the richest, most dangerous, and most powerful people on the planet; no matter how unpleasant contemplating those facts may be.

Given all of this, I don't think anyone will be surprised to learn that Elon is now transforming his ongoing lawsuit against Media Matters for exposing his website's promotion of neo-nazi, white nationalist content to the advertisers paying for his propaganda machine, into a larger lawfare cudgel to go after other non-profit media outlets and public interest groups doing the same thing. What remains surprising to me however, is how easily the public at large dismisses these activities as merely a temper tantrum, when in reality what Musk is trying to do is make it effectively impossible to expose billionaire nazis like himself, while they try to reshape society in their own image, and for their own benefit.

Elon Musk’s Lawyers Quietly Subpoena Public Interest Groups

"The groups include the Center for Countering Digital Hate, the Union of Concerned Scientists, the digital rights organization Access Now, and Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting (FAIR). The subpoenas represent a new chapter in the legal war Musk launched after advertisers fled X, and are part of a lawsuit Musk and X first filed about a year ago against Media Matters over a report it published documenting that ads appeared alongside extremist content. The subpoenas demand any correspondence the organizations have had with that progressive media watchdog group. Several targets told Mother Jones they’ve had no or limited interaction with Media Matters, and that the subpoenas feel, in the words of more than one person, like “a fishing expedition.”

As this piece, and many of the organizations quoted here note, on some level this absolutely *is* a temper tantrum by a billionaire man-child with far too much influence on our society, trying to punish his critics for daring to criticize the way he runs "The Daily Stormer the Social Media SiteTM." Musk is most certainly outraged that puny non-profits and public interest groups are going after the advertiser money he feels entitled to, and now he's going to make them pay by burying them under the cost of defending themselves in court; in precisely the way he's targeted Media Matters itself. But once again I think it's impossible to really understand the importance of this story without examining what it is these organizations are criticizing him for. When a bunch of reactionary investment firms and the richest guy on the planet buy one of the largest social media sites on Earth, and that billionaire nazi proceeds to transform that site into a platform that literally pays neo-nazis, white nationalists, and other fascists to produce content that normalizes fascist ideology, and targets his political enemies, including and especially state-level actors in a position to regulate billionaires, investment firms, and whole industries currently burning the planet to ash for profit, we've gone well past the point where any of this can be described as "internet nazi shitposting."

Whether folks want to believe Musk is capable of the kind of long term planning this sort of operation would entail or not, the obvious reality here is that Musk and his rich investors aren't just declaring war on Elon's critics, they're declaring war on Pig Empire society itself; or at least the parts of it that aren't willing to surrender to fascism and the absolute rule of nazi billionaires, as the world burns. Nobody spends forty-four billion dollars on getting approval and favestars from internet nazis, and everything Musk has done since he took over Twitter makes it abundantly clear that his ambitions far exceed creating a clubhouse for his nazi sycophants.

Mother JonesElon Musk’s lawyers quietly subpoena public interest groupsThe billionaire's legal war over lost X advertisers takes a "really cynical" turn.

I honestly cannot express to you how utterly outraged I am by the degree of fascist fuckery the larger American establishment is deploying to stop, harass, and marginalize people who're protesting against a US-backed genocide conducted by the far-right government of Israel, against Palestinians in Gaza. This story out of NYC sits on a nexus of objectively authoritarian, anti-civil rights bullshit that is honestly borderline Orwellian in nature:

NYC journalist who documented pro-Palestinian vandalism arrested on felony hate crime charges

"A New York City journalist was arrested on felony hate crime charges Tuesday after filming a pro-Palestinian protest earlier this summer in which activists hurled red paint at the homes of top leaders at the Brooklyn Museum.

Samuel Seligson, an independent videographer, was not involved in the vandalism, but is accused of traveling in a car with the activists and entering private property with them, according to a law enforcement official familiar with the case."

Yes, you read that correctly, the NYC police are charging a Jewish journalist, with hate crimes, for filming an anti-genocide protest against the (primarily) non-Jewish members of the Brooklyn Museum's board, in which no one was physically harmed. This story also fits into a larger pattern of protestors (including many Jewish protestors) being charged under hate crime laws, for demonstrating against the genocide in Gaza in ways that are not antisemitic at all, and typically target American institutions that aren't associated with any particular religion or race. Simply saying that opposing an Israeli genocide of Palestinian people in Gaza is "antisemitic" doesn't make it so, and this entire tactic by the larger American establishment is both a mindboggling farce, and an extremely dangerous escalation of authoritarian repression in our society. And that's to say precisely nothing of the freedom of the press issues at work here:

"She described the arrest and use of a hate crime statute as an “appalling” overreach by police against a journalist with a city-issued press credential. Seligson, who is Jewish, is a fixture at New York City protests who has licensed and sold footage to mainstream outlets, including Reuters and ABC News.

“Samuel is being charged for alleged behavior that is protected by the First amendment and consistent with his job as a credentialed member of the press,” Widdi said in an email. “What is even more concerning, however, is that this member of the press is being charged with a hate crime.”

“This is an extremely serious charge against a journalist,” said Robert Balin, an attorney who has defended photojournalists arrested by the NYPD. “If he did not a participant in these events, this could be a brazen violation of the right of the press to gather news.”

My friends, this isn't happening in some backwater district run entirely by GOP fascists; this is Brooklyn, in New York City, a place ostensibly run by liberals, with a Democrat mayor in Eric Adams. Going after Jewish journalists with hate crime charges for covering a protest against bougie Museum directors is absolutely political repression, and it's a clear sign that what lefties have been telling you all along is true - you can't stop fascism just by voting for the Democrat alone, and this reactionary oppression is coming for your town no matter where you live.
