This article in the FT today about the astronomical valuations of a lot of #AI start-ups - most of which seem to have little idea of how they will make revenue let alone profits made me wonder: Google Graphcast , WeatherNext and other NWP applications of #MachineLearning have presumably cost hundreds of millions of dollars too, what could we have done with that money in the #weather and #climate space? Never mind the publicly funded weather services, who provided most of the training data for these services?

A regional outbreak of severe storms is likely across the Mid-Mississippi Valley to the Lower-Mississippi Valley, including portions of the Lower Ohio Valley and Mid South. The cloud cover is scooting by overhead this afternoon - it had already rearranged itself several times since I snapped this shot. A neighbor told me she had seen snow falling aways up in the Cascades as she drove back from Portland. I doubt it'll be clear enough tonight to see the lunar eclipse, sadly, but I might at least step outside then to see what's up.

I don't know if there is anybody who lives in the US Midwest/Dixie Alley on the Fediverse but please do pay attention to the weather going forward today; Friday and Saturday are going to be a big threat.

The National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center outlines a Day 1 (Friday) Moderate Risk (4/5) of severe weather focused on Illinois, with the Enhanced Risk (3/5) area extending from Mississippi/Alabama, through eastern Arkansas and western Tennessee, western Kentucky, southwest Indiana, and southeast Iowa. All severe modes are possible, with long-tracked, powerful tornadoes possible, and large hail likely.
The National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center outlines a Day 2 (Saturday) Moderate Risk (4/5) of severe weather focused on Mississippi and Alabama and extreme eastern Louisiana, with the Enhanced Risk (3/5) area extending from western Georgia to Tennessee. The Ohio River Valley area are under a Slight Risk (2/5) of severe weather. Threats for all areas include violent, long-tracked tornadoes, large hail, and damaging winds.
