"Trump supporters have a remarkable ability to coalesce around whatever explanation they are told to repeat, so the arguments defending the detention are likely to orient around this justification. The idea that Khalil’s views might have “serious adverse foreign policy consequences” for the United States is an obvious pretext for expelling him—and a message to others who might hold or express similar beliefs. Trumpists simply do not approve of his politics and have therefore resorted to using the power of the state to deport him. Trump has styled himself a champion of free speech, but this is what Trumpists mean by “free speech”: You can say what Trumpists want you to say or you can be punished.

Trump has announced as much, declaring that the administration would not tolerate “pro-terrorist, anti-Semitic, anti-American activity.” That is an admission that Khalil’s arrest is not about consequences for American foreign policy but about punishing speech

Due process is a cornerstone of democracy and the rule of law. Without it, anyone can be arbitrarily deprived of life or liberty. Leaders who aspire to absolute power always begin by demonizing groups that lack the political power to resist, and that might be awkward for the political opposition to defend. They say someone is a criminal, and they dare you to defend the rights of criminals. They say someone is a deviant, and they dare you to defend the rights of deviants. They call someone a terrorist, and they dare you to defend the rights of terrorists. And if you believe none of these apply to you, another category might be “traitor,” the label that Trump and his advisers, including the far-right billionaire Elon Musk, like to give to anyone who opposes them."

The Atlantic · Mahmoud Khalil’s Detention Is a Trial RunBy Adam Serwer

History repeats: Judgment at Nuremberg, 1961 -
What will we say to future generations of our time under dictatorship? Americans will have to answer allowing this expansion of autocracy during Trump 2.0, Republicanism and the MAGA cult.

Spencer Tracy as Chief Judge Dan Haywood, Virginia Christine as Mrs. Halbestadt, and Ben Wright as Mr. Halbestadt.

NEW: Family of Mahmoud Khalil just released footage of his arrest

“Stop resisting”
“He’s not resisting”

Black-vanning: non-uniformed thugs who don't give their names, driving ordinary vehicles. This is how dictatorships have always started disappearing people in places like Argentina, Guatemala, the Philippines, Chile, Romania, et al

Columbia University, the epicenter of a number of issues, has conferenced their journalism students to tell them that if they are not US citizens, they should not publish anything likely to anger Trump, Russia, Israel, or the techbros, saying “Nobody can protect you.” They’ve been told to blank their social media of anything that might offend.

And yes, outrage is warranted, but Columbia has in its toolbox some of the brightest legal graduates and professors. If they don’t think they can lawyer up enough to stop this illegal curtailing of speech, the problem is a lot bigger than many people realize. Not the least of which is that other countries are dictating what people can say on American soil.

On one hand, the dean is trying to protect his students, on the other hand, never obey in advance.

The mother of a Canadian woman illegally detained by ICE at the U.S. border wants to know when her daughter will be released.

The U.S. is not safe for anyone. Do not travel there.

“We eventually learned that about 30 people, including Jasmine, were removed from their cells at 3 a.m. and transferred to the San Luis Detention Center in Arizona. They are housed together in a single concrete cell with no natural light, fluorescent lights that are never turned off, no mats, no blankets, and limited bathroom facilities.”

A second German tourist was held in a detention centre after having his Visa revoked by the U.S.

Sielaff is back in Germany after being held for two weeks without cause or explanation.

Jessica Brösche, a German tattoo artist who spent 8 days in solitary confinement without a pillow or a blanket, is still being held. She’s been detained for six weeks.

The U.S. is not a safe place to travel anymore.

Vote with your dollars (and your feet!) and go literally anywhere else.

This is especially applicable to my fellow Canadians. Don’t risk your freedom or support the economy of a country whose leader is threatening to annex us.
